Mudra Monday: Ganesha Mudra

An illustration of a hand gesture known as Ganesha mudra in which the fingers of both hands are used to interlock the hands.

This Mudra is named after the Hindu god Ganesh, who is considered the remover of obstacles

Ganesha Mudra is said to bring about self-confidence and the courage to overcome anything that is holding us back by awakening the energy within. It is practiced by placing the left hand in front of the chest, palm out, and grasping the left hand with the right hand. The hands stay at the level of the heart as they are energetically pulled apart without releasing the grip.

Ganesh, as well as being the ‘remover of obstacles’ is said to sometimes place obstacles in one's path so that he/she can gain strength by overcoming them. The Mudra is therefore thought to have an energetically and physically strengthening effect on the heart. It's link to Anahata chakra (the heart chakra) means that it is considered a heart-opening practice, which can also be used as part of our physical asana practice.

Physically, Ganesha Mudra is a good way of strengthening the muscles of the arms, chest and shoulders. It is said to release tension in these areas and even to open the bronchial tubes and lungs.

Some say that they experience strong feelings of warmth and brightness in the heart area when practicing this Mudra. It can have a particularly uplifting effect for those struggling with mild depression or feelings of heaviness or sadness. It is said to give the practitioner the courage to approach life with an open heart.

Elements: Fire.
